Risa Recio was born in Hong Kong and spent most of her life in the Philippines. She creates work that straddles sculpture and painting, and conveys the physical landscape shaped by the economic, cultural, and ecological systems prevalent in these places she calls “home.” Using a variety of found, scavenged, and ready-made materials related to architecture and building, the work holds a state of suspension and tension between construction and deconstruction via manmade and natural occurrences. The gesture of making is a compulsive act, where she responds to the emotional weight of pursuing an artistic practice away from her home country.
Risa Recio currently lives in Chicago, Illinois. She is an MFA Candidate in Painting and Drawing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
